LCHC Statement on the End of Title 42 and Call to Action for Immigration Reform

As the federal government phases out Title 42, the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California denounces the xenophobic rhetoric and treatment of immigrants at the U.S.- Mexico border. Title 42 was instituted under the guise of public health as a COVID-19 safety measure to control the spread of the virus, in reality – it created racist, anti-immigrant practices that expedited swift deportation of migrants at the border without due process.

Public health principles must not be used in the name of xenophobia. Public health and health justice, in fact, call for a right to access health care and resources for a healthy life for every human being, regardless of where they were born, their skin color and how much money they make.

The US must take responsibility for its role in the global migration crisis. It is our moral duty to set up systems that protect vulnerable families seeking safety and shelter. Additionally, we call on our federal leaders to seek a humane and just immigration reform to provide relief and security for undocumented and DACA-mented Americans currently living in limbo.
