Advocates raise alarms at Capitol over Newsom budget’s impact on immigrants

They pointed to the effects of H.R. 1, which they said introduces work requirements for Medi-Cal, cuts funding for CalFresh and SNAP, and affects federal spending and safety net programs. Rita Medina, deputy director of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, said the impact would be especially significant because Latinos make up about 40% of California’s population.

“It’s January 14th and as of the 1st of January, the state has already gone ahead and implemented self-imposed freezes on access to Medi-Cal for folks who are 19 and older,” Medina said. “These are the types of things that we are pushing back against. We’re calling for health equity and to center investments in healthcare.”
