Policy Briefs: Health Care Reform in California

As you know, Governor Schwarzenegger and the Legislature declared 2007 the year of health care reform.  We look forward to working with the administration and legislature to make health care reform a reality for the 6.7 million uninsured Californians.

Policy Briefs: Quality and Affordable Prescription Drugs

Wanted: Safe, Affordable Pharmaceutical Drugs. Prescription medications are an essential part of health care delivery and have contributed to increasing the quality and life expectancy of patients through the treatment of diseases and conditions. Despite their importance in a health care regimen, many Californians – including the elderly, disabled and low-income – face challenges in accessing affordable medications.

Policy Events: Medi-Cal Language Access Services (MCLAS) Task Force

LCHC currently co-chairs the Medi-Cal Language Access Services Task Force (MCLAS).  California has become increasingly diverse with one in five Californians (6-7 million) speaking English less than “very well”. How do limited English proficient (LEP) patients fare when accessing California's health care system. The MCLAS Task Force is charged with providing a recommendation by December 2007 to the California Department of Health Care Services on how California can maximize existing federal funds to cover health care interpreting for limited English proficient patients. For more information or to be added to the email list, please email Veronica Montoya at vmontoya@lchc.org.

The Task Force will next meet:

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 10:00am

1501 Capitol Avenue, Room 167

Sacramento, CA 95814

Policy Events: Workforce Diversity

LCHC has been asked to chair the Healthcare Workforce Diversity Advisory Committee (HWDAC).  Charged by Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger and to be administered by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), HWDAC is responsible for developing recommendations on workforce development and diversity to complement current health care reform efforts. HWDAC held three hearings during the Summer of 2007 to solicit public input on academic, administrative and policy recommendations to address California's health professions shortages.
