Presents
“A Watershed Moment: Protecting the San Gabriel River”
May 25, 2011
7:00 P.M. At the Eaton Canyon Nature Center
1750 North Altadena Drive
Pasadena
The San Gabriel Mountains represent almost 70% of the open space in Los Angeles County and are in the largest “urban” forest in the nation. 10 million people live within an hour’s drive of these mountains, which provide opportunities for recreation and physical activity, as well as education, spirituality, and an escape from the stresses of urban life. The San Gabriel watershed provides about 1/3 of the drinking water for local communities and is a critical source of environmental benefits such as clean air and clean water.
The San Gabriel Valley is ethnically and economically diverse. Unfortunately, people of color do not enjoy equal access to the region's recreation and natural space resources. Latinos are nearly 50% of the population, but only 11% of visitors to Angeles National Forest are Latinos. While 25% of residents are Asian, less than 5% of Angeles visitors are Asian. Only 1% of Angeles visitors and 0% of visitors to wilderness areas in the forest are black.

Latinos and Mental Health:
A Look at the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) - June 5th, 2008, State Capitol
Today, California’s Latinos are among the fastest growing segment of the state’s population, yet the issue of mental health still remains largely misunderstood and even taboo in the Latino community. This misunderstanding is compounded by issues related to language barriers, access to services and insurance coverage, and lack of culturally appropriate care. Unfortunately, California’s Latinos have higher prevalence rates in chronic conditions, proven to lead to anxiety and even depression. Clearly our physical health is linked to our mental health and well-being. Join us to learn more about Latinos and the issue of mental health, including an update on the Mental Health Services Act. Inspirando Cambio: Leading the Way to Healthy Communities
November 9, 2007, The California Endowment's Center for Healthy Communites
LCHC is the leading organized voice for policies, services, and conditions to improve the health of Latinos. As such, LCHC is hosting a conference entitled “Inspirando Cambio: Leading the Way to Healthy Communities”. Convening advocates, community leaders, and policymakers, LCHC's Conference provides a forum for stakeholders to discuss local and statewide efforts that aim to increase access to health care and improve the social and physical environments that shape health behaviors and outcomes. Recognizing that 2007 has historic opportunities to advance a health agenda, the LCHC Conference will challenge participants to utilize opportunities gained and lead the state to healthy communities.
