The Honorable Richard Pan, MD
RE: Support SB 1000: Beverage Warning Label
Dear Assemblymember Pan:
California is in the midst of an obesity and diabetes epidemic that is wreaking havoc on the public’s health and healthcare costs. Type 2 diabetes, and the painful complications it often comes with including amputation and blindness, heavily impacts certain racial and ethnic groups, including Latinos and African Americans. Obesity now rivals smoking as the largest cause of preventable death and disease in these communities as well.
California consumers have a right to know about the unique and chronic health problems associated with excessive consumption of soda and other sugary drinks. SB 1000 is a common sense approach to providing that vital, science-based information to consumers.
According to the California Department of Public Health’s California Diabetes Program, 1 in 7 adults in our state have diabetes and numbers are rising. Diabetes costs, from hospitalizations, disability payments, and time lost from work, among other things, exceed $24 billion in California each year, with over 13,000 Californians undergoing limb amputations each year.
Comprehensive anti-tobacco legislation has been one of the most successful public health interventions in recent years. It is time for California to build upon the success of the anti-tobacco movement, which has shown that health warnings can increase knowledge and perceptions of risk and can promote smoking cessation among both youth and adults.
SB 1000’s warning label will allow every day consumers to make purchasing choices informed by the latest scientific evidence. It is a major step forward in the fight against California’s obesity and diabetes epidemic. It will protect our families and promote informed purchasing decisions by requiring a warning about the harmful effects of consumption of drinks with added sugars. I strongly support this important public health legislation and thank you for your leadership on this topic.
